We came with fresh faces and a giddy air of anticipation in August 1959 to begin a journey that continues today. We were inserted into a fray that was not of our making nor of our choosing: a clash among ideas and cultures, and learned to tolerate and even to understand a little with gentle guidance from a patient staff.
We took our share of trophies on the playing field and in the classroom; we watched our friends mature and leave, return and succeed, try and fail. We cheered our successes, learned from our failures and wept our sadness at permanent departures. Somehow those challenges that we faced together brought us together knitting us into one homogenous garment of humanity.
Over the years, we have taken our share of trophies on the playing field of life; we have watched our friends mature and leave, return and succeed, try and fail. We have cheered our successes, learned from our failures and wept our sadness at classmates passing. And those challenges that we faced together have continued to bind us, to blend us and blind us to petty indiscretions.
We may be gray Tigers, battered and scarred with corners rounded off, tested and a bit testy now, preferring to stand ringside rather than in the ring, but still Tigers: proud of our heritage, proud to be Little Rock Central Tigers, the Class of 1962.
